In light of the continuing tragedy that is the current conflict in Ukraine, Seraphim and Renaissance Men, New England’s professional male vocal chamber ensemble, will unite to make a joint call for peace with a bold, new presentation of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil, Op. 47. Powerful interpolations of Russian, Ukrainian, and other regional folk songs will bring into dialogue distinct musical legacies. The Chancel Choir of The First Church of Nashua will come into the FM Concert Series for their second seasonal project as part of our 100th organ anniversary. The retrospective musical telling of Christ’s last words on the Cross are woven through the music and beautiful English-translation texts of Théodore Dubois’ “Seven Last Words” accompanied by the mighty Anderson Memorial Organ. (Austin Opus 1406, 1926; III/60).
Joining our professional house soloists within the Music at First ministry: internationally-acclaimed tenor Steven Caldicott Wilson (member of the double Grammy-nominated New York Polyphony vocal quartet) returns back to First Music. The Dubois choral work will be woven into the gentle fabric of a Vespers format. As our second pipe organ (1976 Andover Organ Company, Opus 79, I/3) celebrates her 50th Anniversary in 2026: this sister chamber organ will also be present in the grand Victorian sanctuary, offering additional works by Johann Sebastian Bach. A time to reflect, meditate and contemplate on a winter’s afternoon.
Join us on Sunday MARCH 22 at 3PM for this free program. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and underwritten through the FRIENDS OF FIRST MUSIC.

GMChorale will present Joseph Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War” and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy” at the Santo Fragilio Performing Arts Center at Middletown High School on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. The Middletown High School Advanced Choir, Saecula Singers, Orchestra New England, vocal soloists, and Eric Trudel on the piano will join the 90-voice GMChorale. Weaving all these musical threads together is Joseph D’Eugenio, Artistic/Executive Director of GMChorale.\r\n\r\nHaydn composed the Mass in 1796, at a time when Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army was advancing across the European continent. From the very first measures of the Kyrie, the kettledrum introduces a sense of foreboding. This is intensified in the Agnus Dei, where it is said to evoke alarming images of an approaching army. This is then counterbalanced by the insistent and often bright tone of the Dona nobis pacem, implying that peace must eventually triumph over war.\r\n\r\nWritten in 1808, also during the Napoleonic Era, Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy” is said to have influenced his “Symphony No. 9,” the first-ever choral symphony. The final movement of the 9th Symphony, incorporating Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy,” echoes the familiar melodies heard in his “Choral Fantasy,” written 16 years earlier. \r\n\r\nThese two choral-orchestral works are frequently performed in the same program. Haydn was Beethoven’s teacher in the early 1790s. Pairing these pie...
